Join the JLAC Junior Rowing Team Introductory Meetings for Fall Aug. 27, 2005 9am to 11am Sept. 10, 2005 9am to 11am. Sept. 18, 2005 3 pm to 5pm Where: Jack London Aquatic Center, in Estuary Park, located on the Embarcadero between Oak Street and 5th Avenue. Who Can Join: Any young woman who is enrolled in an Oakland public high school or is attending high school and is an Oakland resident. Our current rowers are students at McClymonds, Oakland, Skyline, Oakland Tech, Castlemont, and Oakland School of the Arts. No rowing experience is necessary. Cost: a sliding scale with a minimum of $75 a semester. Grants are available. Our Coaches: are certified by US Rowing and are highly skilled at working with youth. Questions? Learn to Swim this Summer It is not required that you know how to swim before you join the JLAC rowing team. In fact, the first month of the program will basic swimming skills. If you do not swim, or if you feel uncomfortable in the water, you may wish to take a swimming class this summer, to prepare for rowing in the autumn. There are many places to learn to swim in Oakland. Give Rowing a Try this Summer Three great programs can give you a "taste" of rowing this summer. JLAC This one-week program meets at the Jack London Aquatic Center. Cost: $100. Scholarships available. Schedule: July 11-15:1 p.m. to 4 p.m. August 1-5: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Contact: (510) 208-6060 www.jlacrowing.org National Learn to Row Day June 11, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jack London Aquatic Center Summer Youth Rowing This 2-week program meets at Lake Merritt, hosted by the Lake Merritt Rowing Club. Cost: $75/week. Schedule: June 27-July 1: 9 a.m. to noon June 27-July 1:1 pm. to 4pm.
